La Musica de Baldemar Huerta
(Back Porch Records, 2001)This falls into the category of "labor of love" albums. The melodies of these canciones are lovely, the arrangements wonderful, the guitar solos exquisite, and Mr. Huerta's delivery always tender and heartfelt, even if his pitch quivers a bit. The overall Mexican feel is augmented here and there with a nice Spanish Caribbean lilt. A real delight.
On the radio
Rucker Park, with Trinity
(Saturdays, noon-3 p.m., KFJC-FM, 89.7)Humanistic, alternative hip-hop, good for everyone, but especially for those who believe it doesn't exist.
Dancing in the Fast Lane, with Ann Arbor
(usually Wednesdays, 6-10 a.m., KFJC-FM, 89.7)I'm not a big fan of electronic dance music and post-disco, but I love Ann Arbor's show. She has good taste in that sort of thing, and she spices it up with healthy doses of dub, old soul, hip-hop, cajun, Bollywood, and surf. As a radio personality she treats you like a friend, and she doesn't talk too much.
Lubbock or Leave It, with Joe-Ed
(Wednesdays, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., KFJC-FM, 89.7)America's Back 40, with Mary Tilson
(Sundays, 1-3 p.m., KPFA-FM, 94.1)Lubbock or Leave It and America's Back 40 are both fantastic country music shows. Joe-Ed's leans toward the Tex-Mex and roots-rock end of the country spectrum, and Mary Tilson shades a bit toward the folksy, but their tastes overlap quite a bit. Joe-Ed throws in a local fishing report during the noon hour. Neither of them has any qualms about embracing the hokey and cornball or the politically incorrect if it's great country music. Where else on the radio will you hear plenty of George Jones and Lucinda Williams? And what could be better?
Car Talk (NPR, various times)
You can have your Terry Gross and your This American Life. Give me an hour with the Magliozzi brothers any time.
