African Studies

  • University of Illinois: Graduate College Programs in African Studies 
    The Center for African Studies administers a two-year program of language and area courses
    leading to an interdisciplinary master of arts degree. The program provides both language and area training for three constituencies of students: those seeking to match area expertise with professional training; those proceeding to disciplinary-based doctoral work; and those for whom the degree would stand on its own. The center also administers graduate minors in African studies with various departments.
  • Washington University in St. Louis: African and Afro-American Studies Program
    African and Afro-American Studies at Washington University in St. Louis is an interdisciplinary academic program largely concentrated in the social sciences and the humanities. It offers rigorous instruction to all students interested in the cultural, intellectual, economic, religious, social and political life and history of Africans, African-Americans, and other people of African descent.

    Graduate Certificate Program in African Studies available only to graduate students enrolled at UPenn.

International Studies

  • Stanford University: Institute for International Studies
    IIS seeks solutions to real-world, international problems. It does so by bringing experts from a variety of disciplines within the university together with long- and short-term visitors from other academic, government, and corporate institutions to study contemporary policy issues. Research is focused primarily on international security, the global environment, and international political economy.
  • University of California, Berkeley: Institute of International Studies
    The Institute of International Studies was established in 1955 to promote interdisciplinary research in international, comparative, and policy studies on the Berkeley campus of the University of California.
  • University of Wisconsin-Madison: International Institute
    Institute programs include eight area studies centers as well as programs focusing on global studies, comparative cultures, international relations and the global economy. Each year, the Institute sponsors a broad array of educational and outreach activities, and involves hundreds of participating faculty and students in workshops, conferences, and research circles.
  • Yale University: YCIAS
    The Yale Center for International and Area Studies seeks to make understanding the world outside the borders of the United States, and America's role in the world, an integral part of the liberal education and professional training to which Yale University is dedicated. YCIAS is the University's principal agency for inspiring, nurturing and coordinating teaching, research and public service on international  affairs and societies and cultures around the world.

  • Tufts University: Graduate Program on Agriculture, Food and Environment
    The Program in Agriculture, Food and Environment examines the diverse components --environmental, economic, political, and safety of food production systems. It is designed for students with backgrounds in environmental sciences, nutrition or agriculture who want to broaden their areas of expertise, or for professionals who want to acquire new areas of competence. 
  • Tufts University: World Hunger, Malnutrition, and Development
    This program, with its two fields of concentration -- World Hunger, Malnutrition, and Development and U.S. Food and Nutrition Issues -- offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of nutrition and food policy and covers such topics as economic development, policy and program design, management and implementation, primary health care, epidemiology, food systems, statistical methods, survey research, and data analysis.
  • University of California, Davis: International Agricultural Development Program
    The University of California, Davis offers a Master of Science degree in International Agricultural
    Development (IAD). This degree is administered by the Graduate Group for International Agricultural Development. The IAD Graduate Group is composed of 81 faculty members in different departments across the
    Davis campus. Members of the IAD Graduate Group are active in international research and development programs and represent collectively many years of
    experience in less developed countries.
  • Florida International University: Graduate Program in International Studies
    The Graduate Program in International Studies at Florida International University is an interdisciplinary program designed to prepare students for careers in government, the private sector, or international agencies. The program focuses on the broad issue of socio-economic development. Students may specialize in the area of international relations and development, social change and development, development economics, or Latin America and Caribbean studies.
  • University of Oregon: International Studies Program Department Information
    The International Studies Program offers interdisciplinary bachelor of arts (B.A.) and master of arts (M.A.) degrees. Beginning in fall 1996, the department will also offer an interdisciplinary minor. Themes of the program are cross-cultural communication and understanding, environmental issues, and international development. A student's course of study is tailored to meet career objectives, leading to opportunities in education, government, law, communications, business, non-governmental organizations, philanthropic organizations, and private voluntary organizations.
  • Old Dominion University: Graduate Programs in International Studies
    The Graduate Programs in International Studies (GPIS) were established by
    Old Dominion University and the Commonwealth of Virginia to promote advanced, graduate-level interdisciplinary research and training on global problems and transnational issues. The programs grant M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in international affairs. Current student enrollment is 60 students in the M.A. and 18 students in the Ph.D. program.
  • Columbia University: School of International and Public Affairs

    The Master of Professional Studies (MPS) degree program in the field of International Agriculture an Rural Development (IARD) at Cornell University is designed for individuals with professional experience in the developing world. This interdisciplinary program, based in the College of agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), has the flexible design that is needed by development professionals from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. The IARD program is suited for people wanting advanced training but without disciplinary restrictions or emphasis on research methodologies. This is a program for those who want to undertake studies in a broad range of interrelated subjects that is aligned with the interdisciplinary challenges needing to be confronted in developing countries.

    The Department of International Relations at
    Boston University offers five Master of Arts programs through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Students can choose from the one year degree program, two joint degree programs with the Center for Energy and Environmental Science or the College of Communication, and two dual degree programs with the School of Law or the Graduate School of  Management.
  • Monterey Institute: Graduate School of International Policy Studies
    The Graduate School of International Policy Studies (GSIPS) undertakes to prepare public policy professionals with the multidisciplinary knowledge and analytical skills necessary to succeed as managers and leaders in the nonprofit, public and private organizations of the global marketplace. This mission includes a conscious commitment to international engagement through such additional skills as advanced proficiency in a second language, cross cultural communication, and collaborative  problem analysis and problem solving in a diverse learning/working environment.
  • University of Washington: The Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies
    The
    Jackson School offers eight interdisciplinary programs leading to a Master of Arts in International Studies (MAIS). While all eight require study or competency in a foreign language, the focus of each is primarily in the social sciences and history.
  • Brigham Young University: International Development
    International Development Studies is a multi-disciplinary program which was specifically created and designed for students who are interested in playing an active professional role in research and intervention related to facilitating development processes in Third World Nations as well as with the poor and displaced peoples of the industrialized world including both free world and former communistic bloc countries.
